A. Sejarah Perkembangan Musik India
      Musik India, perkembangan musik India dimulai kira-kira sejak abad ke-2 setelah masehi. Bangsa Arya yang bermigrasi ke India membawa pengaruh yang besar terhadap perkembangan musik di India. Musik bagi bangsa India memiliki arti tersendiri, yang pengaruhnya sangat besar terhadap magis, religius, kesusastraan, ilmu, dan seni lainnya.
Permulaan dan inspirasi bagi musik India adalah memuja para dewa dan dewi. Menurut legenda, dewa Shiwa yang menciptakan suara, irama, dan tari-tarian yang lalu Ia turunkan lewat orang bijak dan diajarkan kepada manusia. Seorang guru yang bernama Narada adalah seorang musisi spiritual dan penyanyi yang menulis buku risalah tentang musik naradasiksa. Guru bernama Barata yang menulis Natyasastra yang berisikan tentang musik, tarian dan drama.
Sebuah tradisi yang sejak dulu tidak tertulis sangat sulit untuk dilacak untuk dievaluasi. Namun sumber-sumber musik India kuno dapat ditemukan di Sarna Verda. Berisikan ikhtisar dari nyanyian-nyanyian yang dinyanyikan jaman dulu oleh pendeta brahma kepada dewa-dewi vedic.(sekitar 100 – 600 BC) Sarna Verda juga menjelaskan tentang 7 not dalam scale dan 3 macam instrumen. Yaitu Vina (instrumen musik dengan 7 senar), Veni (suling), dan dundubhi (drum).
Setelah periode vedic, memasuki periode klasik India muncul adanya teori mengenai grama (scale), murchanna (modes), dan jati (spesies). Musik secara bertahap menjadi lebih terarah dan kompleks.sebelum era Kristen musik telah berkembang sebagai musik sekuler di India.
Kehadiran agama islam juga sangat berpengaruh terhadap perkembangan musik di India di mana terjadi peleburan dua budaya yang berbeda yaitu India dengan budaya Persia, Arabia, sampai Mesir. Jenis musik baru dan alat musik baru bermunculan. Di era inilah instrumen Vina berkembang menjadi Sitar. Salah satu hal yang paling menarik dari perkembangan musik di periode islam adalah penggabungan seni musik dengan seni lukis.

B. Ragam Musik India

1. Tradisional

Musik tradisional India adalah jenis kesenian musik tradisional dari India. Walaupun India memiliki wilayah yang sangat luas dan beranekaragam kebudayaan, namun mewarisi tradisi bermusik yang sama. Musik telah bermula sejak lama di India dan tradisi tersebut terus diwariskan. Dikarenakan negeri ini adalah tempat lahir agama Buddha, pengaruh musiknya mengalir ke banyak negara bersamaan dengan agama tersebut. Sumber terawal adalah sebuah kitab kuno Natya Shastra mengenai pentas drama yang diiringi tarian dan musik. Sistem musik kuno India dijelaskan dengan 22 pembagian oktaf yang menghasilkan 2 buah tangga nada dengan 7 bunyi dasar. Setiap bunyi di kedua tangga nada dapat berperan sebagai bunyi pertama sehingga membuat kesemuanya menjadi 14 bunyi. Kitab tersebut juga menjelaskan mengenai karakter emosional dari tiap bunyi. Bagian utama dari konsep musik India adalah mode yang dinamakan ragas. Ritme dalam musik India dibangun dari blok bangunan yang lebih kecil ke yang lebih besar, sebuah konsep yang berpengaruh dalam musik barat mulai abad ke-20. Ritme dasar ini dinamakan talas. Pada dasarnya ritme musik India monodik (monoton) yang hanya terdiri dari satu melodi yang mengalun melawan melodi yang lebih rendah, dan pada melodi lainnya dikuti tabuhan gendang. Musik umumnya dimainkan untuk hiburan namun sumber aslinya adalah ritual agama Hindu. Walaupun musik India dilengkapi dengan teori yang kaya dan membutuhkan notasi, tradisinya diwariskan secara oral antara guru dan murid. Alat-alat musik India yang penting sebagian besar adalah alat musik gesek dan alat musik perkusi, antara lain sitar, sarod, tambura, tabla dan vina. Alat musik tiup memainkan sedikit peran dibanding di musik barat.

2. Klasik

Musik klasik India adalah salah satu bentuk musik tertua di dunia. Sejarahnya dapat ditelusur balik ke masa lagu-lagu doa suku di India, hymne Veda dan musik rakyat, dan sangat bersifat melodis. Yang membedakan musik klasik India dari sebagian besar genre lain adalah penekannya pada melodi dan sifat staccato dalam nada-nadanya. 

Meskipun terbagi menjadi Hindustani (India Utara) dan Karnatik (India Selatan), asal muasal dan konsep fundamental dari kedua jenis musik ini tetap sama. Satu hal yang layak disimak adalah bagaimana dua jenis musik klasik ini bervariasi dalam bentuk presentasi dan doa-doa dalam musik.

3. Modern
Pada hari ini, ada orang-orang jauh lebih sedikit yang menikmati musik klasik India karena mereka merasa terlalu lambat bagi mereka. Banyak anak muda melangkah lebih jauh terming musik klasik menjadi membosankan. Tapi kemudian, menikmati musik adalah suatu perjalanan pribadi dan semata-mata tergantung pada suasana hati. Namun, sesuai dengan waktu dan tuntutan, hari ini, komposer musik yang paling telah bergeser dari klasik ke bentuk baru, dimana mereka menyerap melodi India dan lagu-lagu dengan ketukan barat.
Modern Indian music terdiri dari:
· Remixes, di mana lagu-lagu lama yang dicampur dengan berdetak lebih cepat membuat mereka populer di kalangan generasi muda. Ini umumnya dimainkan di disko dan pesta.
· Fusion adalah jenis musik di mana musik klasik India dikombinasikan dengan bentuk-bentuk musik barat untuk membuat campuran musik timur dan barat
· Musik Film ini sebenarnya sangat populer di antara orang-orang dari semua kelompok umur. Bahkan sebuah film India dianggap lengkap tanpa lagu dengan pahlawan dan pahlawan menari. Tidak diragukan lagi ada perbedaan yang jelas antara jenis lagu yang terdiri antara 1940-an dan 1980-an dan mereka terdiri sejak
· Indi pop, yang pada dasarnya adalah versi India dari musik pop barat. Ada sejumlah seniman muda yang mendaftar dengan perusahaan musik untuk memotong sebuah album lagu pop dalam bahasa Hindi dan bahasa daerah lainnya.

Musik India modern telah lebih dari pengaruh barat dan hampir imbibes salah satu bentuk tradisional. Pada kenyataannya bahkan dasar-dasar musik klasik India, raga dan Taal, telah dihapus dari komposisi terbaru dengan komposer menggunakan skala barat dan nada. Bahkan musik baru yang dihasilkan membawa dalam gaya yang lebih tua dan memadukan mereka ke dalam akord barat, sehingga menciptakan perpaduan timur barat memenuhi jenis musik.

3. Sistem Nada Musik India
   Semenjak abad ke-19 India memiliki susunan tangga nada yang tetap. Dalam satu oktaf telah ditetapkan terbagi menjadi 22 syurti ( interval ) yang tidak sama. Deretan nada pokok pada musik India ada 2, yaitu sa-grama dan me-grama. Masing-masing dari deretan nada pokok tersebut memiliki tujuh nada yang dapat dinaikkan atau diturunkan dengan berbagai cara.
